Abstract

The celebration of the feast of St Thomas Aquinas (7 March), sponsored by the University and held in the church of the Convent of Santa Cruz la Real, was introduced after 1577. Like the other celebrations organised by the University, it was solemnised with a group of singers and musicians hired for the occasion.

La festividad de Santo Tomás de Aquino (7 de marzo) fue instituida en la Universidad de Granada con posterioridad a 1577, ya que no se incluye en el contrato que esta corporación hizo con los ministriles de la catedral para servir en el resto de las que ya patrocinaba a lo largo del año. Sí la encontramos en el concierto que la Universidad hizo en 1619 con los ministriles de la Capilla Real por diez años: Jusepe de Florencia, Pedro Romero, Félix Ayllón y Julián Gutiérrez. Al igual que en el resto de las otras fiestas religiosas organizadas por la Universidad, los integrantes del claustro asistían a las vísperas y misa celebradas, en este ocasión, en el convento de Santa Cruz la Real. Hay referencias a los pagos de los cantores y ministriles en las fiestas de la universidad al menos hasta 1648.
