The organs (I): From the old church of San Pablo to the collegiate church of San Salvador

The organ is one of the most important testimonies by which to connect historical sound with the present, and for this reason we will develop several itineraries to allow us to study the introduction and presence of this instrument in the ecclesiastical institutions of the city. Whenever possible, events are accompanied by resources that allow the organ being visited to be heard. These tours will also stop in churches and convents where none of the instruments that were part of their material heritage actually survive, but which will be covered in the corresponding events. We will also take into account those organs that fall outside our chronology, but which are the last witness of a continuous presence of this instrument within the walls of the church; they can sometimes preserve inside remnants of previous organs that were frequently incorporated into the newly-built instruments. The first of these routes begins and ends, or vice versa, since it can be walked in both directions, in the original and final locations of the collegiate church of El Salvador, connected, in this case, by an organ originally built for site of the church in the Albaicín; the instrument then followed the chapter in its definitive transfer to the church of San Pablo –in the plain of the city– the former location of the Jesuits.

Recommendations:

The main inconvenience to visiting many of the churches and convents of the city are their opening hours, generally reduced to the times of liturgical worship there. The convents of San Jerónimo and Santa Isabel la Real and the churches of El Salvador and San Juan de Dios have opening hours for tourist visits; for the rest of the institutions you have to consult the schedule of Masses. The church of San Bartolome is currently closed. The old high choir of the convent of La Encarnación has not been preserved.
