Eugenio Salazar de Alarcón, governor of the islands of Tenerife and La Palma, in a letter addressed to his friend Miranda de Ron, recounts in a satirical tone the adventure of his journey to the Indies, accompanied by his wife and children, where he moved to take up his post as judge (oidor) in Santo Domingo in 1573. In this letter, he describes numerous elements of the soundscape of the “city” they were sailing towards.
